At NASA, asteroid observers have detected a giant asteroid, which is to touch the Earth today from close quarters. This new asteroid is said to come close to the surface of the Earth. Currently, the asteroid is coming at an accelerated pace of 26,843 mph. And the close approach to the Earth, which is just 107,828 miles away! When c, the distance between the Earth and the moon is about 238,800 miles on average. Asteroid observers at NASA have opined that this is the closest approach by some asteroid on the moon-earth surface in a long time.
The name which is attributed to the asteroid is 2019 VD. Incidents of close asteroid approaches have become quite common now, and this is the latest addition to the series. Experts at NASA have come forward with the fact that with these asteroid approaches, various kinds of space rocks have come close to Earth in the past few months. The rocks are in varying sizes and shapes. Interestingly, 2019 VD is considered as a near-earth asteroid. The orbit of the asteroid is such that it crosses the orbit of the Earth in the same manner as that of 1862 Apollo. It was on 25th October 2019 that asteroid trackers from NASA saw and detected this space rock. When classified, they noticed that the rock was a NEO (near-earth object). To be particular, it is an Apollo-type asteroid. Since this is an Apollo asteroid, the rock has the capability of “Earth-crossing.”
This means that the orbital path of the stone around the moon brings proximity to Earth. It also lets the stone cross the orbit of the Earth. Impact on Earth is not expected from the asteroid. If a slight collision also happened, significant damage would have been inflicted. As per the official website of CNEOS, the rock has a diameter of 65 feet. The asteroid is almost the same size as well-known Chelyabinsk meteor, which exploded in 2013 in the Russian sky. There was an air blast causing several injuries and property damages.
